PG Epps was thowing some well-deserved cold water on my Tory enthusiasm on another thread:

“Yes! though the “center-right” parties currently getting some joy in Europe (Sarkozy’s France and Berlusconi’s Italy) are, let us be frank, the socialists with firmer, rather than the socialists with dreamier, foreign policies…”

This reminded me of an amusing poster I saw back in the day. It had Margaret Thatcher explaining the differences between American and British politics:

“In our country, as in your country, there are two parties — The Labour Party, which in your country would be the Socialist Party, and the Conservative Party, which in your country would be the Socialist Party.”
