Phil Kerpen & James Valvo on Biofuels and Economics on NRO Financial
Really, people. Really. Taxpayers are asked to pay subsidies for farmers to grow crops they wouldn’t otherwise grow, to be sold at prices they wouldn’t otherwise sell for, to be processed for purposes they’re no good for: we make more expensive, less efficient fuel, which we then mandate/subsidize to market, so that the same taxpayer who foots the bill for these subsidies pays more per gallon (more expensive) for more gallons (less efficient) for poorer performance (more fouling) and no gains against the intended metric, carbon emissions. Which is ridiculous, because . . . there’s no reason to believe carbon emissions matter.
How do these people get elected? I mean, really now. . . .
I’ve always maintained that producing ethanol is a step backward from our reliance on foreign oil. Spwaking of which, I can’t stand it when people infer “Middle-Eastern oil” from foreign oil. Anyway, back on point….what we need to do is build more oil refineries. It would take about a decade before the first new one could come on line, and we’ll just have to eat it in the meantime. But, using ethanol will give us nothing to eat in the meantime. We won’t be able to afford gas or food. Screw the hippies, I need cheaper gas for my 15 mpg SUV. Seriously……I have a 15 mpg SUV….and I need cheaper fuel.
Hell, if someone can devise a way for my car to run off good ole h2o, I’d convert in a heartbeat.
Hear hear! I’m still figuring out how I feel about the issue at large, but it’s clear to me that ethanol is NOT the answer.
Omnivore’s Dilemma… yes it is a food book but there is an extensive discussion about the cultivation of corn as a commodity that is absolutely fascinating in light of our current problems with corn.
And I also drive a gas-guzzling SUV because you know what, we can’t afford a new more efficient vehicle right now. We got a great deal on a used 10 yo Ford Explorer from a family member. It seems to me that the people most likely to upgrade to more efficient vehicles are the ones most able to afford gas!
Ethanol and Mike Huckabee are two good reasons not to like Iowa.
That, and it’s Iowa. You need no other reason tahn the name.
