A much-storied Buddhist curse goes, “May you live in interesting times.”
These are very much interesting times. Between Tibet and the Olympics, it seems the tiger under the table has begun stirring, as rent-a-mob propaganda waves begin to give way to DDoS and other tech attacks originating in China against sites in the US and elsewhere whose behavior is inconvenient to the regime.
Now, in fairness, we should note that whereas the Chinese have been known to use cattle prods on Tibetan ascetics, only Islamists are currently televising beheadings of enemy civilians and engaging in suicide bombing. Nonetheless, the world in which the notion of “freedom of speech” was incubated is going to have to think seriously about its commitments in the future. SlideShare, at any rate, has thought about it this far:
SlideShare insists that it will do everything it can to protect its users’ freedom of speech. As such, it has no plans to remove any of the content in question.
(TechCrunch, SlideShare Slammed with DDOS Attacks from China)
But there is more; much more. Keep paying attention, cyber-citizens….
Keep your ears on.
