Awesome Americana: The Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum

This is one of the coolest museums ever. Located on I-95 at exit 102, just south of Savannah, it’s a great stopping-off point when traveling to Florida. They have a ton of aircraft on exhibit, including a Komet (a rare German rocket plane), a Mig-17 Fresco, a B-47 Stratojet, a P-51 Mustang, an ME-109, and more.

In addition, there are exhibits of American, German, Brit and Japanese pilot gear, letters home and so on. The docents tend to be veterans of the Mighty 8th who are glad to talk with you about their experiences. There’s even a B-17 door gunner mock-up complete with video screens where you can shoot down incoming German fighters.

A great place to teach your kids about duty, sacrifice and patriotism.
